What Is a Share Certificate?
If you have heard of CDs or Certificates of Deposit, Share Certificates are the credit union equivalent. A Share Certificate typically has a fixed term that you choose when you open the Share Certificate account based on the Terms (lengths of time) that are available. Terms typically range from 3 months to 5 years.
How Do You Open a Share Certificate?
You can open a Share Certificate the same as you would open other deposit accounts: by receiving the proper disclosures, agreeing to the account's terms & conditions, and making an initial deposit. Unlike checking and savings accounts, you usually cannot deposit more money into your Share Certificate after it's been opened. Your Share Certificate earns interest during the Term, and the end of the Term is called Maturity. Some Certificates renew at Maturity, and you should find out how that will work before opening your Share Certificate account. You may have a small window to close the account and avoid any fees.
How Does a Share Certificate Differ From a Savings Account?
On the topic of fees, Share Certificates often pay a higher yield than checking or savings accounts. This is because your money is intended to be locked in place throughout the Term. If you close the Certificate before Maturity, you will likely be assessed an early termination fee. This can often be several months or even years worth of dividends (interest) that your account has earned. Having a portion of your money tied up for a period of time is the price you pay for a higher yield compared to other account types.
